József Attila: (Már réges-rég...)

Portre of József Attila

(Már réges-rég...) (Hungarian)

Már réges-rég rájöttem én,
kétéltű vagyok, mint a béka.
A zúgó egek fenekén
lapulok most, e költemény
szorongó lelkem buboréka.

Gondos gazdáim nincsenek,
nem les a parancsomra féreg.
Mint a halak s az istenek,
tengerben és egekben élek.

Tengerem ölelő karok
meleg homályú, lágy világa.
Egem az ésszel fölfogott
emberiség világossága.

(It came to me…) (English)

It came to me ages ago
that my life, like the frog's, is double.
At present, I'm lurking below
the rumbling skies, this verse provides
my anguishing soul with a bubble.

Attentive masters I have none,
no worm-like servants trying to please.
Like gods and like fishes I'm meant
for life in the skies and the seas.

My seas are softly embracing,
and warming and dim are my quarters.
Drawn by the shining of reason
I'm caught and am flung from the waters.
