Biography

Poet and essayist Ivan Laučík comes from Liptovský Mikuláš. He graduated from a high school there (1958-1962); later studied Slovak and history in Martin (Pedagogic Collage), Banská Bystrica (1963-1967) and in Prešov (1981-1984). He worked as a school manager in the village of Veľké Borové, later (1968-1980) taught at a grammar school in Liptovský Mikuláš, at a high school in Liptovský Hrádok(1981-1991); during the revolution of 1989 took part in the civic movement and in 1990 became a Member of Parliament for the Public against Violence movement. Later, he was a director of a school board in Liptovský Mikuláš and in the 1990s he taught at various high schools in the region of Liptov. He died on 12 May 2004 in Liptovský Mikuláš.

In the 1960´s Laučík was a member of the informal “Lonely Runners” group connected to the journal Mladá tvorba (together with Ivan Štrpka and Peter Repka). He was the first “Lonely Runner” to publish a collection of poetry: Pohyblivý v pohyblivom (1968). Two years later second volume of poetry came out: Sme príbuzní na začiatku (1970). After a longer period of silence he published his third book of poetry: Na prahu počuteľnosti (1988). More volumes followed in the ´90´s: Vzdušnou čiarou (1991) and  Havránok (1998). In 1999 an anthology of his lyrical poems was translated into Portugese. In 2000 he published a book of essays Mikuláš – príbeh mesta. In 2001 an anthology of his poems was published in English.
