Biography

Pavol Rankov was born on 16th September 1964 in Poprad, Slovakia.  He studied librarianship at the Philosophy Institute at Comenius University in Bratislava and graduated in 1987.  He has remained devoted to his line of study as he works as the assistant professor at the Institute of Libriary and Information Science at Comenius University in Bratislava.  He pursues the issues of social communication and the standing of libraries within, and furthermore the relationship between communication and culture and sociological research of reading and media (in 2002 his subject publication "Mass culture, media and information society" was published, in 2006 the book "Information Society: Perspectives, Paradoxes, Problems".).

He has started to publish prose in 1990.  It were mainly his short stories published periodically and these were the ones awarded in Slovak literary competition Jasíkove Kysuce (he was a runner-up in years 1990 and 1992; and a prize winner in 1991).

His first collection of stories "S odstupom casu" (1995) won the Prize of Ivan Krasko (début of the year). Later (2003) it has been translated to Bulgarian. In 2002 his second book of stories "My a oni/oni a my" is coming out (also published in Hungarian translation).  In 2005 his third collection of short stories "V tesnej blizkosti" was published. The book has been published in Arabian translation in Syria in 2007.

Pavol Rankov also works as a columnist and a script writer and is writing for the radio.  He is the author of dialogues for the film of Slovak and Czech co-production "Zostane to medzi nami" (2003, director M. Sindelka).
