He was born
8 April 1938 into a family of a Protestant clergyman in Modra. He studied Slovak at the Philosophical Faculty in Comenius University in Bratislava. He worked in the City Archive in Košice and on the staff of the daily Pravda. At the same time he helped to found the literary quarterly Krok 66 and bi-monthly Krok 67 which he edited. In 1968 he moved to Matica Slovenská in Martin. In this traditional Slovak cultural institution he edited the fortnightly Matiččítanie (Matica Readings) and from 1970 he worked in its Biographical Institute. For his outspoken political attitudes he was dismissed and banned from publishing. In 1970 he moved to Pukanec where he worked as the chief of a book shop. Since 1990 he has worked in the Institute of Slovak Literature in Bratislava.
