Biography

(28. 4. 1960 Devínska Nová Ves)

The life and oeuvre of the prose writer Peter Pišťanek is, in some respects, representative of more recent Slovak literature of the ´90´s. To start with, his biography sets him apart from authors of previous generations. Pišťanek was born and grew up in Devínska Nová Ves (once a village near Bratislava, now one of its Quarters); he was expelled from a high school in Bratislava in the ´70´s and didn’t take his school exit exams until 1991. His later attempts to study in the Faculty of Theatre at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava failed. He did manual labor in various companies during the ´80´s. After his first books were published, he worked at various posts: editor in chief (1992-1994) of the weekly Tele-video-relax, later „creative director“ in an advertising agency, nowadays editor in chief of the popular Slovak Internet journal inZine. He lives in Devínska Nová Ves.
Although Pišťanek started to publish in the ´80´s (his first published texts were short stories in Slovenské pohľady), his real prosaic debut came out later, in 1991 – that was the very popular novel Rivers of Babylon. Two years later it was followed by a triptych of novellas, Mladý Dônč (1993) (one of the novellas was published before). In 1994 a loose sequel to Rivers of Babylon (Rivers of Babylon 2 alebo Drevená dedina) came out. The third part of the series followed in 1999 (Rivers of Babylon 3 alebo Freddyho koniec). Pišťanek also published a book of mini-stories, Skazky o Vladovi (1995), and three years later its sequel Nové skazky o Vladovi. He penned the screenplay for the feature film based on his first novel (Rivers of Babylon), which was shot in 1998.
