Szilágyi Domokos: What Can Poets Do? (A költő mit tehet? in English)

Portre of Szilágyi Domokos

A költő mit tehet? (Hungarian)

A költő mit is tehet?
Teleírhatja csillagokkal
a mennyboltot,
míg alusznak a csillagászok.
Teleírhatja rózsákkal a kertet,
míg alszik a május.
Teleírhatja napfénnyel a strandot,
míg alszik a napfény.
Ó, százegyszer is kifoghat
a késedelmeskedőn!
Teleírhatja reménységgel
a szállongó időt,
míg alusznak az emberek.

What Can Poets Do? (English)

What can poets do?
They can write stars
all over the sky
while astronomers sleep.
They can write roses all over the garden
while May sleeps.
They can write sunshine all over the beach
while sunshine sleeps.
Oh, they can umpteen times get round
the dawdlers!
They can write hope all over
the lingering time,
while people sleep.
