Szilágyi Domokos: Book Of The Old (detail) (Öregek könyve (részlet) in English)

Portre of Szilágyi Domokos

Öregek könyve (részlet) (Hungarian)

Mi örömöt tartogat még az élet?
(Tartogat-e valamit egyáltalán?)
A mások örömét,
örömeinkből fakadottak örömeit
(az öröm megmaradásának elve,
ha mi már meg nem maradhatunk).
Örömeinkből fakadott örömök
visszaszállnak fejünkre,
mint az áldás,
mint az átok
(egy tőből fakadt e két szó,
egy törzsnek két hajtása,
egy arcnak két orcája,
egy madárnak két szárnya:
egyikkel előre röpül,
a másikkal hátrafelé;
és közös sírba temetődik,
élni az öntudatlanságot
halál után,
mint éltük
születés előtt -
hisz azelőtt is megvolt mindkettő,
csak éppen nem tudtunk róluk,
mint ahogy nem fogunk
tudni majd azután sem).

Book Of The Old (detail) (English)

What pleasure is there still left in life?
(Is there any left at all?)
The pleasure of others,
the pleasures grown from our pleasures
(the pleasure conservation law,
since we can’t be conserved yet).
The pleasures grown from our pleasures
come home to roost
like blessings,
like curses,
(the two words are closely related,
two branches of the same trunk,
two cheeks of the same face,
two wings of the same bird:
with one it flies forward,
with the other backwards,
and they’re buried in the same grave,
to live that unconsciousness
after death,
like we did
before birth -
since both existed before that, too,
just we didn’t know of them,
just as we won’t know of
them after that, either).
