Szenes Anikó: One - two - three... (Egy – kettő – három... in English)

Portre of Szenes Anikó

Back to the translator

Egy – kettő – három... (Hungarian)

Egy – kettő – három...

     nyolc a hossza.

Két lépéssel mérem a szélet,

Kérdőjelként lebeg az élet.

Egy – kettő – három...

    tán egy hét is,

Vagy a hó vége még itt talál,

De fejem felett a halál.

Huszonhárom lennék

   most júliusban.

Merész játékban számra tettem,

A kocka perdült. – Veszítettem.

1944. VI. 20.

One - two - three... (English)

One - two - three...

    eight feet long

Two strides across, the rest is dark...

Life is a fleeting question mark.

One - two - three...

    maybe another week.

Or the next month may still find me here,

But death, I feel is very near.

Now, in the month of July,

I am 23 years of age,

In a daring game of numbers I placed my bet,

The dice rolled, I lost.

This poem was found  in Hannah's death cell after her execution.
