Pilinszky János: Magamhoz

Portre of Pilinszky János

Magamhoz (Hungarian)

Bátran viseld magányodat,

én számon tartlak téged,

ne hagyd a sorsod csillagokra,

benned érjen a végzet.

Vállad két éber sarka közt

ha sisteregve átcsap,

tudom, több vagy mindannyiunknál,

benned vakít a bánat.

Légy hát, akár az állatok,

oly nyersen szép és tiszta,

bátran figyelj, mint ők figyelnek

kegyetlen titkaikra.

S egy éjjel, magad sem tudod,

mint égig érő ének,

feljönnek benned napjaid,

a halhatatlan évek:

az este nem lel senki rád,

az este sírva, késve

hiába járják pitvarod:

csak én látlak. Vagy én se.

To Myself (English)

Bravely carry your solitude,

I keep account of you,

don’t entrust your fate to the stars,

let destiny reach in you.

If between your vigilant shoulders

Crackling bolt strikes,

I know you are more than all of us,

in you glaring sorrow blinds.

So be like the animals,

such raw-beauty and pure,

bravely listen, as they listen

to their secrets so cruel.

One night, even you don’t know,

as a song reaches high,

your days arise in you,

the years immortal:

that night no one finds you,

that night late and cry

they walk your porch in vain:

Only I see you. Or neither do I.
