Pilinszky János: Onto The Margin Of A Passion (Egy szenvedély margójára in English)

Portre of Pilinszky János

Egy szenvedély margójára (Hungarian)

A tengerpartot járó kisgyerek
mindíg talál a kavicsok közt egyre,
mely mindöröktől fogva az övé,
és soha senki másé nem is lenne.

Az elveszíthetetlent markolássza!
Egész szive a tenyerében lüktet,
oly egyetlen egy kezében a kő,
és vele ő is olyan egyedűl lett.

Nem szabadúl már soha többé tőle.
A víznek fordul, s messze elhajítja.
Hangot sem ad a néma szakitás,
egy egész tenger zúgja mégis vissza.

Onto The Margin Of A Passion (English)

A small child along the seashore
will always find among the plenty a pebble
that’s been his since times immemorable,
and could never belong to anyone else.

He clutches the unlosable so tightly!
In his hand his whole heart is throbbing,
the stone is so one and only in his fist,
with it he became, too, so lonely.

He can’t ever again get rid of it.
Turns towards the sea, throws it far away.
No sound can be heard of this mute breakup,
still the whole sea rumbles it back in dismay.
