Nemes Nagy Ágnes: Félelem

Portre of Nemes Nagy Ágnes

Félelem (Hungarian)

Szeretlek. Nincs rá szó, nincs mozdulat.
A rémülettől görcsösen szeretlek.

langyos a lég, a füst is tündököl,
a vonaton szöllő-szagú kosár,
a sűrű illat hajunkra ömöl,
csordultig érett, s szétbuggyant a nyár –

Hét esztendeje szeretlek, szerelmem,
fordíts egyet a Göncöl-szekeren
szólj a világnak, mondd, hogy lehetetlen –
s maradj velem.

Fear (English)

I love you. No word, no gesture can express it.
I love you paralysed with deadly fear.
I make a list of all the horrors which
prey on me and you, glare in our face cruelly.

I only list and recite them each single day,
I start up from gasping dreams in alarm,
I prepare for times even more terrifying,
I fondle your emaciated, warm arms -

We drank beer out there in a garden of ruins,
memory-layers, pallid autumn sky,
I muttered a childhood poem of mine,
’Leaves wither, turn yellow, but don’t yet fall’,

leaves turn yellow, and each moment is final,
the Illyrian dancer squirms her navel,
the Latin-style amphora’s hidden in the weeds,
bicycles to sell on a two-metre tall board,

even the smoke glitters in the mild air,
train smells finely of grapes in a basket,
the heavy fragrance pours on our hair,
overripe to the brim summer has busted -

I’ve been loving you seven years, my dearest,
turn over the Great Bear a little bit,
tell the whole world, say it’s impossible -
and stay with me.
