Kosztolányi Dezső: My soul is so dead, empty... (A lelkem oly kihalt, üres in English)

Portre of Kosztolányi Dezső

A lelkem oly kihalt, üres (Hungarian)

A lelkem oly kihalt, üres,

mint éjjel a tükör.

Holtan világít egymaga

a bűvös fényű kör.

Ő látta hajdan a napot,

a májusi eget.

De most belé az árvaság,

a semmi integet.

Elmegy, ki látja itt magát,

a táj is elenyész.

Övé a csönd, az éjszaka

s meghal, ki belenéz.

My soul is so dead, empty... (English)

My soul is so dead, empty,

like the mirror at midnight.

Dead, illuminating alone,

the circle of enchanted light.

Formerly it saw the sun,

May-time's heaven,

But now in it orphanhood,

nothingness beckons.

Who sees himself here departs,

the land too falls away.

His will be silence, the night,

and who looks into it will die.
