Hervay Gizella: Song for three voices (Ének három hangra in English)

Portre of Hervay Gizella

Ének három hangra (Hungarian)

I

Az ember kiáltana kétségbeesetten,
s énekké válik a szava,
csak az állat nyüszít,
ha nem szabad vonítania.

Csak az ember hallgat,
ha nem jajgathat végeérhetetlenül,
csak az ember énekel,
míg a jajgatásból kimenekül.

Csak az ember hallgat,
az állat nyüszít a fájdalomtól,
csak az ember énekel:
örömöt teremt a fájdalomból.

II

A kő a napról álmodik,
A nap a kőről álmodik,

A víz a földről álmodik,
A föld a vízről álmodik,

Az ember a mindenségről álmodik,
A mindenség az emberről álmodik.

A virág a vízbe vándorol,
A hold a halálba vándorol,
A lélek a lélekhez vándorol.

Kővé válna a nap,
Nappá válna a kő,
Emberré válna az ember.

III

Az ember csak akkor döbben a világra,
ha rákényszerül.

Magára kell maradnia, hogy megértse:
nincs egyedül.

Csak akkor döbben önmagára,
ha szükség van minden erejére,
meg kell nyernie a harcot,
nem állhat félre.

Kénytelen hős lenni, mert gyenge,
de szebben hangzik, tisztábban, hogy ember –
kénytelen emberré válni
az embertelen küzdelemben.

Song for three voices (English)

I

Humans cry out desperately,
and turn voice to song,
animals, alone whimper,
when not allowed to howl.

Only the human stays silent,
when forbidden the endless wail,
it’s the human voice still singing,
until it escapes from the wails.

Only the human stays silent,
animals whimper from pain,
only the human keep singing:
creating rejoicement from pain.

II

The stone dreams about the sun,
The sun dreams of the stone.

Water dreams about the soil,
The soil dreams of water.

Man dreams about vastness,
Vastness dreams of man.

The flower into the water wanders,
The moon into death wanders,
The soul to soul wanders.

The sun would turn into stone,
The stone would turn into the sun,
Human would turn into human.

III

Man realizes the world only
if it is forced upon him.

He has to be left alone to understand:
he is not alone still.

Wakes up to himself only,
when he needs all his strength
to win the battle,
when he cannot passively stand.

Compelled by weakness to be hero,
but sounds straighter: just human -
he's compelled to be human
in the unhuman combat.
