Heltai Jenő: Ars poetica

Portre of Heltai Jenő

Ars poetica (Hungarian)

Költő, ne légy szemérmes!
Az első sorba állj!
Na várj, míg valaki kérdez,
Ordítsd ki, hogy mi fáj.

A szíved tedd tenyeredre
S akárhogy bánt a fagy,
Pőrére meztelenedj le,
Mutasd meg, hogy ki vagy.

Ne várj, míg valaki kérdez,
S torkodba fojtja a szót,
Azért se fogd be a szádat,
Üvöltsd, mint tíz Behemót.

Ne törődj a ronda tömeggel,
Ha mérge szívenharap,
Éjből fakad a reggel,
Homályból kel föl a nap.

Keményen állj, sose dőlj meg
S bármily keserű a kehely,
Fenékig ürítsd ki, dögölj meg,
De holtig énekelj!

Ars poetica (English)

Do not wait till you’re invited.
Poet, claim your place
on the rostrum. Warn the neighbours
of the threat they face.

Share your heart with their cold world.
Share each fear, each scar.
Shed your armour, shed your clothes:
show all that you are.

Do not wait until you’re silenced
never to sing again.
Never, ever, hold your tongue.
Bellow out your pain.

Watch the racist rabble-rousers.
Mark the lies they spawn –
The night is long and dark and deadly,
but expect the dawn.

Slanders hurt... but your song is true.
It will outlive any lie.
Drink up your poison if you must,
but sing until you die.

This poem written during the Nazi era of Hungary, appears in the landmark anthology Survivors: Hungarian Jewish Poets of the Holocaust translated and edited by Thomas Ország-Land (Smokestack Books, England, 2014).
