Ady Endre: Uram, ostorozz meg

Portre of Ady Endre

Uram, ostorozz meg (Hungarian)

Uram, bántottál, űztél, megaláztál,

Sokféle ostort suhogtatott kezed:

Te tudtad, miért.

Kis szolgád bizton nagyokat vétkezett.

Hajh, bűnös voltam, nótáid elloptam,

Nőid csókoltam s kortyongattam borod.

Méltón sujtott rám

Könnyben áztatott, sós, éles ostorod.

Minden bűnömből külön ostort fontál,

Csöpp, beteg vérem sokszor kiütközött,

Ám csók-ostorod

Legfájóbb ostor ostoraid között.

Uram, utolszor evvel ostorozz meg

Nagy bűnök után méltón, fájón, nagyon

És azt az asszonyt,

Kire korbácsolt, rossz szivemet hagyom.

Scourge me, Lord (English)

Lord, Thou hast plagued me, harried, put me to shame,

Thy hand hath brandished scourges of many kinds.

Thou hast known the reason:

Great, forsooth, have been Thy little servants sins.

Sinful indeed have I been, stealing Thy tunes,

Swilling Thy wine, making love to Thy women.

Worthily Thy scourge,

Soaked salt in tears, sharp, hath brought retribution.

Thou hast fashioned a lash from each of my sins,

Oft have I been cut to the quick, blood has flowed.

Yet Thy scourge of love

Of all Thy scourges causeth the keenest woe.

Lord, be that the last with which Thou scourgest me

Justly for my great sins, painfully and hard,

And that woman too

To whom I bequeath my chastised, evil heart.
