Áprily Lajos: Provision (Útravaló in English)

Portre of Áprily Lajos

Útravaló (Hungarian)

A lélek,

mikor búcsúzva bontja szárnyait,

visz magával a földről valamit.

Eszmét, melyet világra ő hozott,

virágot, melyet ő virágoztatott.

Én Istenem, én mit vigyek neked?

Nem vihetek én mást, csak verseket.

Kiválasztok pár utamra valót,

a többinél tisztábban dalolót.

S ahol ösvénnyel vár az égi rét,

zenét hallok majd, felséges zenét.

Barátom, aki már előre ment,

azt a zenét rég hallja odafent.

S ahogy azt a muzsikát hallgatom,

azt a keveset rendre hullatom.

Az a zene csak vallatja velem:

Süket sor... nem merem... ezt sem merem.

S amikor, Uram, hozzád érkezem,

könnyű kezem miatt szégyenkezem.

A választottakból csak egy maradt,

az, melyben elfogtam egy sugarad.

Az, amelyikbe n elmondtam neked,

hogyan szerettem drága földedet.

S szólok: Csak ennyit hoztam. Ó, Uram,

ne ítéld meg nagyon szigorúan.

Provision (English)

The soul,

when saying farewell opens its wings

takes always something from the earth with.

A new idea it once brought to world,

a flower that by it into blossom turned.

My God, what could I take to you?

I can take nothing but poems, a few.

I choose some to take on my road,

the ones that sound in purest mode.

Where celestial field shows me the path,

I’ll hear some music, majestic kind.

My dear friend having gone ahead

hears that music up there on end.

And as I listen to those heavenly tunes

I let fall the poems I once did choose.

That music makes me but declare:

Deaf line… don’t dare… nor this do I dare.

And when, Lord, I arrive home to you,

for  my empty hands I’ll be ashamed, too.

From those once chosen only one remained,

where one of your mighty rays I retained.

The poem in which I described with words

how deeply I loved your precious earth.

And I’ll say: That’s all I’ve brought, Oh Lord,

don’t judge too strictly about my hoard.
