Sova, Antonín: Once more in thought we'll return (Ještě jednou se vrátíme ... in English)
|
Once more in thought we'll return (English)Once more in thought we'll return, where the heavy fragrance of flowers
Lured us away from the road, when evening in lilac and silver Flowed over meadow and stream, once more the song shall enchant us That fell from the open window, on the garden charmed into silence. Yet once again we'll discover one pathway, one wood in the mountains, All incandescent with autumn, in so many riotous colours. After the ruined chords we shall seek out the lingering echoes, After the soft, light step, we shall look for the secret footprints. The soul, impaled on its memories, pours out in the grass of the meadow So many lyrical fancies, dropping in resinous tears, Its branches, lofty and sombre, are bathed in the autumn sunlight, Its slender trunk threads a twilight, a gloom of passing cloud-shadows; When moment of time, here on the darkening pathway, When the sunset hour overwhelms the heart with its burden of sorrow. |
