Křesadlo, Jan: The Travelling Versemonger Rondel (Rondel potulného veršovce in English)

Portre of Křesadlo, Jan

Rondel potulného veršovce (Czech)

Za grošík, za tři, nebo pět
kupte si rondel, dobroději,
baladu, nebo triolet,[1]
verše, jež harmonicky znějí.

Je málo místa pro naději
ve světě, jako je náš svět.
V básni má všechno lepší vzhled,
kupte si rondel, dobroději.

Snad se vám trochu vrátí zpět
co mívával jste nejraději:
Někdy se tyhle věci dějí
i když jde o pár prostých vět,
pár tónů, vůni nebo květ.
Kupte si rondel, dobroději !

The Travelling Versemonger Rondel (English)

Pennyworth, thruppence, fivepence pay,
do buy a Rondel, kind Sir, wise;
Triolett, Ballad, every way
verses that sing, and harmonise.

There’s little hope, you realise
in a world such as ours, eh?
In verse, the outlook’s not so grey.
Do buy a Rondel, kind Sir, wise.

You may find things come back the way
you used to love, a nice surprise:
Sometimes it 'appens when one tries
‘though it’s just oddments, words that play
some notes, a scent or flowers’ spray.
Do buy a Rondel, kind Sir, wise !
