Biography

prose writer, author of literature for children, journalist

She was born
15 November 1933 in Velké Meziříčí (nowadays in the Czech Republic). In 1950 she started to work in Slovak Radio and at the same time she studied at the Philosophical Faculty of Comenius University. From 1954 she worked on the staff of the youth daily Smena, a post she lost in for political reasons. The embargo on her writing was lifted only as late as 1958. In 1968, after the occupation of Czechoslovakia, she emigrated to Canada and settled in Toronto. Her name and her books disappeared from Slovak literature. In Canada she worked with several theatre groups, later in broadcasting and since 1976 she edited a magazine for Slovak and Czech emigrés and cooperated with Josef Škvorecký’s 68 Publishers. Since 1988 she has been living in Guelph in the province of Ontario.
