Halottvivők éneke (Magyar)

Sár, sár, sár e világ. Minden a sírba tér.
Rúttá mindeneket ront a kevély Halál.
Gőgös némber ölén vaksi gyökér toroz;
megroppan szeme csillaga.

Ó, ó, - vétkül az Úr rójja nekünk nehogy:
jó kis bőr vala rég, atyafiak, kinek
romlandó tetemét rossz derekunk, szuvas
vén vállunk nyögi! - jaj, bizony.

Fáin nőcske vala! - Hej, biza, cimborák...
sokszor kertbe szökött akkor a pej csikó!
forró pendely alatt sokszor akadt keszeg!
szaggat most meg a csúz, a csúz.

Irgalmazz, igaz Úr! két szeme mint a láng;
ringott mint gyönyörű cédrus a termete;
nem volt másik olyan gazdamenyecske még!
zsák búzákat emelgetett!

Hát még... átal urán, fölkele éccaka,
nadrágszárba bujik, szűrt kanyarít kerek
két vállára - Gonosz, lám mire bujtogatsz! -
istállóba oson vala.

Nyergetlen toporog, horkan a vasderes,
árnyék száll hegyibe: férfi - vagy asszony-e?
nem hallik dobogás: nesztelenül kocog,
rongyban suppog a négy pata.

Szunnyadj, gazda! höhő, messzire jár a ló!
domb, völgy messze marad, - város alatt nyerít;
más ágyán egerész, haj, a menyecske már,
kedvét kedvese töltözi!

...Hajnalt szól a kokas. Harmat ereszkedik.
Baktat ló, lovas is vissza a kert felül. -
Ekképp vót, feleim. Akit e sír fogad,
számot most vet az Úr előtt.

Nem dolgunk, mit itél majd ama Nagy Király,
törvényt gyermekein mint tesz a Mindenek
Fő-Fő Atyja, - hiszen vékony az érdemünk,
gyarlóság viselő-ruhánk.

Tisztel bárha a köz, megsüvegöl kanász,
csősz, bakter, tehenes, - hm, odaát kehes
zsöllérek ha leszünk, tántori kódisok,
- kezdjünk jókor alázatot!

Ránksülhet miegyéb: kéve lopott zabok;
megcsipkedtük a más holdfaru asszonyát;
férges sunka miatt lesz akit, úgylehet,
minden szolgasuhanc lepök.

Csakhát - vétkek ide, vétkek oda - Urunk,
nincs több oly kutyaság, mint emez asszonyé;
képes rá, hogy eléd orca-emelve lép,
meg nem hajtja konok szivét.

Büntesd, sújtsd a pogányt! - Ládd, mi meszet veszünk
föstjük templomodat, két papot étetünk, -
mégis reszkedezünk: hát mikor elhivatsz,
fogd, Isten, remegő inunk...

Pallbearers's song (Angol)

Mud, mud, mud is the world. All things tend to the grave.
Proud Death ruins and brings life down to its level.
Blind roots cling to the skirts worn by the haughty slut
whose favourite soon comes a cropper.

Woe are we, for the Lord hath set his face against sin,
think how sweet was the flesh, fathers, of she whose rank
bloat corpse weighs so ungainly on our stiff shoulders
and arthritic waists, so help me.

Real neat trick in her time! Believe me, my friends
more than once she would sneak down the garden fence,
hot tailed mare that she was, not overdressed either,
how my joints ache with the ague.

Lord have mercy on us, how her two eyes could burn;
her whole body would sway cedarlike, wondrously;
no bride matched her at housewifery, how she could
throw those great sackfuls of wheat about.

Want more?... Quietly, while her husband is snoring,
she slips trousers on, throws a fur cape round her two
broad round shoulders and - Satan, get thee behind me -
tiptoes off down to the stables.

Horse stands there unsaddled, grey, stamping and snorting,
Who mounts her like a shadow, man or a woman?
no hoof heard on the ground not a peep. She has bound
its feet up in rags, clever girl!

Snore on master! The horse is miles away now!
Hill, vale, all in her wake. She is passing the town;
See your bride making hay with her fancyman, she
fancies him more than she does you.

Dawn! dawn! cries the old cockerel. The dew starts to lift.
Soon home now. The grey horse trots back to the garden.
Thus it was, gentlemen. She, you are burying,
is even now waiting on God,

whose great verdict is final, not to be queried.
How Our Lord in His wisdom applies his own laws
is His business. Our merits are paltry enough
our very garments are sinful.

Folk may show you respect and doff their hats to you,
swineherd, gamekeeper, porter, cowman - hm, but there,
who knows what you might be, a cotter, a cripple...
best practice humility now!

Old crimes catch up with you; pinching a sheaf of co
or the fine full bottom of the neighbour's wife,
or the labourer's boy might blow the whistle on
a pound of maggoty rasher.

Hang on, Lord - never mind a sin here a sin there -
that one there was a bitch with a nerve. How she would
show her face without shame and stand in Thy presence
so uncontrite like, unbending.

Make her suffer, the pagan! See, here is the lime,
smoke shall rise to the rafters. We'll feed up two pries
yet O Lord we are fearful; you call men so sudden,
hold steady our trembling, Father...
