Demény Ottó: Bridge (Híd in English)

Portre of Demény Ottó

Híd (Hungarian)

Híd - annyi csak - két rét között
két árva partot összeköt
alatta pár lépésnyi árok
mélyén kékhátú víz szivárog

néhány cövek pár deszkapalló
a réseknél szilánkká foszló
pereg a vízbe morzsaléka
kapkod utána álmos béka

karfája is csak egyfelől
az is lassan kifele dől
a víz fölött láthatni árnyát
ha túl a napot már lerántják

híd mégis a táj pöttöm lelke
a távolság fonálkeresztje
emberi szándék - áthaladni
egyik partról másikra jutni

a szép hajnal bearanyozza
dűlt korlátját beharmatozza
pallóit meghinti sugárral
parázzsal piros lángolással

Bridge (English)

Mere bridge two meadows joining hands
connection twixt two orphaned lands
narrow the ditch a few steps or so
blue-backed water is seeping below

some stakes and some planks a few perhaps
fraying to splinters along the gaps
which fall to the water down below
frogs try to grab them are sleepy slow

only one handrail can be seen
even that with an outward lean
waters below reflect its shadow
when the sun is snatched off the meadow

the bridge is land's soul so one could say
crossed hairs for aiming at far away
a human objective is the text
to leave one shore and to reach the next

sunrise will plate it glittering gold
its leaning rail with dew will enfold
and its planks with a sprinkling of rays
ember-red bursts of flame will embrace
