Rafi Lajos: February in Güdüc (Güdüci február in English)

Portre of Rafi Lajos

Güdüci február (Hungarian)

A szél odakint a térdén töri a fákat.
Fütyülök rá. Beszél a nőkről a székely.
Torkomban érzem a vágyat:
nyalintsak vele egy pohárral.

…mert igaza van, s életét megedzette
a föld meg a kín.
Szépségét érzi ő is a szónak, s a szíve
ha sír:
locsolni próbálja a torkát.

Túl a hegyen, a tüzes napot fedi
a füst.
Szép lenne itt nekem is minden,
tördel a kín. Nézem a székelyt.
Kék szemében béke hajnalok,
kezével mintha csillagokat fogna:
most faragja fából a holnapot.

February in Güdüc (English)

Outside, the wind smashes the tree into pieces.
That doesn’t bother me. The Szekler is talking about women.
My throat feels dry;
I want to take a dram with him.

… because he has rights, and his life has been tempered
by the earth and by torments.
He also knows the beauty of words,
and when his heart weeps,
he moistens his throat.

Beyond the mountain, the glowing sun
is covered with smoke.
Everything could be lovely for me too.
But pain tortures me. I look at the Szekler.
In his blue eyes is a dawning peace
as if he has captured a star;
now he carves his tomorrow from wood.
