Radnóti Miklós: Of the wife: a dotty song (Együgyű dal a feleségről in English)

Portre of Radnóti Miklós

Együgyű dal a feleségről (Hungarian)

Az ajtó kaccan egyet, hogy belép,
topogni kezd a sok virágcserép
s hajában egy kis álmos szőke folt
csipogva szól, mint egy riadt veréb.

A vén villanyzsinór is felrikolt,
sodorja lomha testét már felé
s minden kering, jegyezni sem birom.

Most érkezett, egész nap messze járt,
kezében egy nagy mákvirágszirom
s elűzi azzal tőlem a halált.

Of the wife: a dotty song (English)

The door bursts into laughter: she arrives,
the flowerpots greet her with secret trembles,
and in her hair a sleepy, slim, blonde streak
chirps up, the tiny cry of a frightened sparrow.

In turn, the aging light-flex shouts with joy,
it twists its awkward shape in space towards her,
all objects spin around, I can’t keep track.

She has come home, she’d been away all day,
she holds a petal of a giant poppy:
she uses that to drive away my death.
