Radnóti Miklós: The hunted (A bujdosó in English)

Portre of Radnóti Miklós

A bujdosó (Hungarian)

Az ablakból egy hegyre látok,

    engem nem lát a hegy;

búvok, tollamból vers szivárog,

   bár minden egyre megy;

s látom de nem tudom mivégre

    e régimódi kegy:

mint hajdan, hold leng most az égre

   s virágot bont a meggy.

The hunted (English)

From my window I see a hillside,

     it cannot see me at all;

I’m still, verse trickles from my pen

     but nothing matters in hiding;

I see, though cannot grasp this solemn,

     old-fashioned grace: as ever,

the moon emerges onto the sky and

     the cherry tree bursts into blossom.
