Kányádi Sándor: Coming New Year (Új esztendő in English)

Portre of Kányádi Sándor

Új esztendő (Hungarian)

Új esztendő, új esztendő,
nem tud rólad a nagy erdő,
sem a hó alatt a határ,
sem a határ fölött szálló
árva madár.

Új esztendő, új esztendő,
nem volt a nyakadban csengő,
nesztelenül érkeztél meg,
lábad nyomát nem érezték
az ösvények.

Csak a hold, az elmerengő,
csak a nap, az alvajáró,
jelezték, hogy újra megjő
éjfélkor az esedékes
új esztendő.

Csak mi vártunk illendően,
vidám kedvvel, ünneplőben,
csak a népek vártak téged,
háromszázhatvanöt napi
reménységnek.

Coming New Year (English)

Coming new year, coming new year,
the huge forest doesn’t know you here,
nor do fields under snow unstirred,
nor above the fields up flying
poor, lonely bird.

Coming new year, coming new year,
you had no bell round your neck, dear,
you arrived noiseless in a haze,
your footsteps were not sensed at all
by the pathways.

Only the moon, meditating,
only the sun, the sleepwalker
showed signs that it’s arriving,
the one that’s due at midnight hour,
new year’s coming.

Just we were there duly impressed,
high spirits, in our Sunday best,
only people were waiting for you,
three hundred and sixty-five days
of hope in view.
