Sebestyén Péter: Vasco Núnez de Balboa Reaches the Pacific Ocean (Vasco Nùnez de Balboa kijut a Csendes-óceánhoz in English)

Portre of Sebestyén Péter

Vasco Nùnez de Balboa kijut a Csendes-óceánhoz (Hungarian)

Panama, 1513. szeptember 23.

Mindenki így akarta. Kasztília és Aragónia zászlaja idegen szelekben lobog. Más itt az este. Nem létező csillagok gyúlnak; miattuk égtek a mágusok Toledo főterén. Az inkvizítor padre hibbantan motyog.

Don Vasco a halhatatlanságra gondol.

Vasco Núnez de Balboa Reaches the Pacific Ocean (English)

23rd September 1513, Panama

Everyone wanted it like that. The flag of Castile and Aragon is waved by strange winds. Evening is different here. Stars not existing before light up; it’s because of them that magicians were burnt in the main square of Toledo. The inquisitor padre is mumbling crazily.

Don Vasco is thinking about immortality. About the faith he abandoned long ago.

„This Sea is the Sea that gets back into itself: Earth is like a melon, round for all that. Let all feeble-minded Dominicans rage. Heading east ends here. I can never glimpse the golden domes of Jipangu, neither can I see the empire of Presbyter Johannes; I can’t see the eight-legged horse snatched by phoenixes. So, we’re turning back. Or rather: they’re going home (if they want), and I won’t stay here either. There’s still north and south; and there can be more seas and more earth which would prevent God (if there is one) from forcing the hoop of roundness around the world.”

So he said, ‘We’ll stay here overnight. In the morning we’re going on; waiting for us there will be eternal glory and God’s new kingdom, which – so help us Christ – we will establish for the glory of Spain and the Church of Christ.

The Conquistador got up long before dawn. He left his camp, and no human (or European) eyes saw him ever again.
