Orbán Ottó: Psalm (Zsoltár in English)

Portre of Orbán Ottó

Psalm (English)

You are comely, my beloved, comely as you lie naked on the bed we share,
You are all hills and dales, rich in heights and hollows, thicket and floss,
And a silken thread dwells in your mouth, and your tongue coils that silk around my loins,
For you do not hold in disgust any gladness of the flesh,
For what gladdens the flesh gladdens the soul too on the bed we share,
And I am your gladness, as you are mine.
And serpents dwell between your thighs and I am pressed hard by their loops,
For love is life and death, at the selfsame juncture,
It is one half creation, and one half destruction,
But for the most part it is a well built fire, even chilly old age can warm up by its flame.
See my beloved, what our love has done to us, we are both trembling
As if the earth were shaking underneath, when only a spring creaks in the bed.
And you draw the long-bow of my waist, to shoot its sizzling arrow into your womb,
The nerve's tautened bowstring twangs and rings on,
And inside me a fireball is rising, it wants to erupt into the light,
And sperm-cells are circling in your womb, like birds in the breeze.
You are comely, my beloved, comely is your body bathed in sweat, your dripping hair, the dark circles around your eyes,
Then you turn, fall asleep and, scarcely heard, you snore in your dream.
And I sleep too, soundly, dreamlessly, until sunrise, without a break.
