Pilinszky János: Every Breath (Minden lélekzetvétel in English)

Minden lélekzetvétel (Hungarian)

Minden lélekzetvétel megsebez,
és leterít valahány szívverés.
Különös, hogy a tenger halhatatlan,
holott minden hulláma végitélet.

Hogyan is igazítja sorsát,
az öröklétet, Isten, a teremtés
mindörökre veszendő mezejében?

Mint a füvek lemondó élete,
mint a halandók egy-egy szívütése,
olyan lehet végülis a dicsőség,
Isten nyugalmas boldogsága.

Every Breath (English)

Every breath taken hurts, and
every heartbeat knocks me down.
It’s strange that the sea is immortal,
though each single wave is last judgment.

How does God adjust His fate,
eternity wasted for ever
in the vast field of creation?

Like the resigning life of grass,
like mortals’ every single heartbeat,
glory might be after all like that,
God’s serene calm rejoicing.
