Pilinszky János: We and They (Mi és ők in English)

Portre of Pilinszky János

Back to the translator

Mi és ők (Hungarian)

Hogy elkárhozunk, rendbe van,
de hogy a mezitlábas állatok,
még inkább rendjén. Mivel ők
szülik, szoptatják, nevelik
a magatehetetlen Istent,
s a keresztfáról leszedett Fiút
még Mária elől is rejtegetve
mindenüvé magukkal cipelik.

We and They (English)

That we should suffer damnation
is fair enough, but fairer still
for the barefoot beasts. Since they
bear, nurse, nurture
the helpless God, and
hiding him even from Mary,
the Son freed from the cross,
lug him around everywhere.
