Petőfi Sándor: A time of fear (Szörnyű idő... in English)

Portre of Petőfi Sándor

Szörnyű idő... (Hungarian)

Szörnyű idő, szörnyű idő!
S a szörnyüség mindegyre nő.
Talán az ég
Megesküvék,
Hogy a magyart kiirtja.
Minden tagunkból vérezünk,
Hogy is ne? villog ellenünk
A fél világnak kardja.

És ott elől a háború
Csak a kisebb baj; szomorúbb,
Mi hátul áll,
A döghalál.
Be kijutott a részed
Isten csapásiból, o hon,
Folyvást arat határidon
Két kézzel az enyészet.

Egy szálig elveszünk-e mi?
Vagy fog maradni valaki,
Leírni e
Vad fekete
Időket a világnak?
S ha lesz ember, ki megmarad,
El tudja e gyászdolgokat
Beszélni, mint valának?

S ha elbeszéli úgy, amint
Megértük ezeket mi mind:
Akad-e majd,
Ki ennyi bajt
Higgyen, hogy ez történet?
És e beszédet nem veszi
Egy őrült, rémülésteli,
Zavart ész meséjének?

A time of fear (English)

A time of fear, a time of dread!
And horror grows, fear leaps ahead.
Perhaps in heaven
The oath was given
To extirpate the Magyar race.
Our bodies bleed from limb to limb,
And why? Against us now there gleam
The swords of half the world ablaze.

Out on the battlefield, the war
Is woe enough, yet sadder far
The plague that roams
Here in our homes.
On Hungary, you take full share
Of every scourge of God, and Death
Reaps with both hands on every heath
A never-ceasing harvest there.

And shall we perish, every man?
Or shall survivors still remain
The tale to tell
Of this black hell,
This savage age, to all the earth?
If one survivor lives, can he
Describe this fearful tragedy
As each event is brought to birth?

Were he a true account to give
Of these events through which we live,
Who would believe
Or who conceive
That such a tragedy occurred?
Would it not seem a fantasy,
A terror-stricken madman’s lie
Devised by minds deranged and blurred?
