Balassi Bálint: He pleads for forgiveness before his intended marriage (Kiben bűne bocsánatáért könyörgett akkor, hogy házasodni szándékozott in English)

Portre of Balassi Bálint

Kiben bűne bocsánatáért könyörgett akkor, hogy házasodni szándékozott (Hungarian)

1
Bocsásd meg, Úr Isten, ifjúságomnak vétkét,
Sok hitetlenségét, undok fertelmességét,
Töröld el rútságát, minden álnokságát,
könnyebbíts lelkem terhét!

2
Az én búsult lelkem én nyavalyás testemben
Té-tova bujdosik, mint madár a szélvészben,
Tőled elijedett, tudván, hogy vétkezett,
akar esni kétségben.

3
Látja magán való szántalan nagy sok jódat,
Kiért, tudja, téged nem tisztelt, jól tött urát,
Háládatlanságát látván hamis voltát,
ugyan szégyenli magát.

4
Akarna gyakorta hozzád ismét megtérni,
De bűnei miatt nem mér elődben menni,
Tőled oly igen fél, reád nézni sem mér,
színed igen rettegi.

5
Semmije sincs penig, mivel elődben menjen,
Kivel jóvoltodért viszont téged tiszteljen,
Vagy alázatosan, méltó haragodban
tégedet engeszteljen.

6
Sok kísértet éri, mindenképpen rettenti,
Véled ijesztgeti, kétségre sietteti,
Ki miatt majd elvész, ha véle jól nem téssz,
magát Pokolra ejti.

7
Jajgatván nagy sokszor említi szent nevedet,
Mondván: Vajha az Úr hozzá venne éngemet,
Bizony kedvét lelném, mert őtet követném,
mint édes Istenemet!

8
Bátorítsad, Uram, azért biztató szóddal,
Mit használsz szegénynek örök kárhozatjával?
Hadd inkább dicsérjen ez földön éltében
szép magasztalásokkal.

9
Az te szódat, tudom, mihelyen meghallhatja,
Ottan szent nevedet, mint atyját, úgy kiáltja,
Kiterjesztett kézzel, sűrű könyves szemmel
magát reád bocsátja.

10
Legörögvén könyve orcáján, úgy megkövet,
Magad is megszánnád, látván, mely keseredett,
Mert zokogásokkal, siralmas szép szókkal
kér fejének kegyelmet.

11
Irgalmasságod is annál inkább kitetszik,
Azmennél több vétke néki megengedtetik,
Inkább kegyelmedben, mint büntetésedben
te irgalmad tündöklik.

12
No, nem tartod, tudom, tovább haragod rajta,
Mert az békességre te jobb kezed kinyújtva,
De csak olyanoknak, kik utánad járnak,
mert vagy mindenek ura.

13
Térj azért, én lelkem, kegyelmes Istenedhez,
Szép könyörgésekkel békéljél szent kezéhez,
Mert lám, hozzáfogad, csak reá hadd magad,
igen irgalmas úr ez.

14
Higgyünk mindörökké igazán csak őbenne,
Bűntűl őrizkedjünk, ne távozzunk el tőle,
Áldott az ő neve örökké mennyekbe,
ki már megkegyelmeze.

15
Éneklém ezeket megkeseredett szívvel,
Várván Úr kegyelmét fejemre szent lelkével,
Té-tova bujdosván, bűnömön bánkódván,
tusakodván ördöggel.

He pleads for forgiveness before his intended marriage (English)

Bless me with forgiveness, Lord, for all my sins of youth,
all my doubts, my misdeeds, my betrayals of Thy truth,
wipe out my transgressions, ugliness and falsehood,
ease from my soul its grave load!

As a bird is drifting, tossed and pummelled by the storm,
thus my restless spirit wanders through my earthly form,
so greatly fearing Thee, dreading to look at Thee,
prone to perish in alarm.

Listing the many boons Thou hast bestowed upon me,
for which, Lord, I have not given equal quittancy,
seeing my selfishness, falsehood, and foolishness,
I loathe myself bitterly.

No matter how often I would wish to pray to Thee,
because of my sins I fear to make approach to Thee,
heavily my sins weigh, thus I lost my true way,
Lord, I fear Thy face to see.

So, quite like a beggar, I have naught to offer Thee,
nothing in return for all Thy good deeds done for me,
naught this poor sinner hath to soften Thy great wrath
to arouse Thy great mercy.

So many temptations terrify my very thought,
forcing me through fear into impiety and doubt.
Unless Thou shouldst save me, I shall perish gravely,
I shall drop into the pit.

Tortured, I keep calling often on Thy Holy name.
I say "if God only would have pity on my shame,
I would sin no longer but follow Him yonder
who, to save me, man became."

Do encourage, therefore, Lord, Thy servant, shield his side,
for how wouldst Thou profit if, condemned to hell, I died?
Let me praise Thee, rather while alive, and gather
grateful thanks - be glorified!

As soon as I hear Thy answering word, I do know
I shall cry Thy Great Name in a great and loud `hallo!'
with my arms spread cross-like, eyes with tears filled, pond-like,
on my knees myself I throw.

Cascading, my tears flow, as I plead my case with Thee,
surely, Thou hast pity, and wilt my repentance see -
as in great convulsion I conduct repulsion
of my sins, and beg mercy.

The more Thou forgivest, the more pleasing Thy great peace.
The more Thou forgettest, the more freeing is Thy space.
How couldst Thou be gracious if we weren't so vicious?
In our sins lieth Thy grace!'

Thou wilt not persist in - I know now - Thy righteous wrath.
Stretched out is Thy right hand, sign of peace its gesture hath.
Thou seest those mostly, who seek Thee devoutly,
for Thou art the Primal Word.

Therefore, my soul, do turn to God merciful today,
Answer to His calling - He loveth us all, alway!
Listen to His wording, answer thou His calling -
submit thyself to His way!

Let us, therefore, all put all our trust in Him alone!
Let us conquer sin, and from Him be no longer gone!
let His Name be blessed, in the Heavens sacred,
for He doth let us atone.

I have sung these verses with my sore heart, bittermost,
awaiting God's mercy, to come with the Holy Ghost -
languishing and hiding, guilty-sore, a-pining,
wrestling with the Devil's host.
