Visszatekintés (Hungarian)

Én is éltem... vagy nem élet
Születésen kezdeni,
És egynehány tized évet
Jól-rosszul leküzdeni?
Én is éltem... az a sajka
Engem is hányt, ringatott,
Melyen kiteszi a dajka
A csecsemő magzatot.

Első nap is oly borultan
Hajola reám az ég!
S hogy nevetni megtanultam,
Sírni immár jól tudék;
Sohase birám teljébe'
Örömeim poharát;
Az ifjuság szép kertébe
Vas korláton néztem át.

Félve nyúltam egyszer-máskor
Egy rózsát szakasztani:
Késő volt - a rázkodáskor
Mind lehulltak szirmai.
Keresém a boldogságot,
Egy nem ismert idegent:
Jártam érte a világot -
S kerülém ha megjelent.

Vágytam a függetlenségre,
Mégis hordám láncomat,
Nehogy a küzdés elvégre
Súlyosbitsa sorsomat:
Mint a vadnak, mely hálóit
El ugyan nem tépheti,
De magát, míg hánykolódik,
Jobban behömpölygeti.

Álmaim is voltak, voltak...
Óh, én ifju álmaim!
Rég eltüntek, szétfoszoltak,
Mint köd a szél szárnyain.
Az az ábránd - elenyészett;
Az a légvár - füstgomoly;
Az a remény, az az érzet,
Az a világ - nincs sehol! -

Nem valék erős meghalni,
Mikor halnom lehetett:
Nem vagyok erős hurcolni
E rámszakadt életet.
Ki veszi le vállaimról...
De megálljunk, ne, - ne még!
Súlyos a teher, de imhol
Egy sugár előttem ég.

Szende fényü szép szövetnek, -
Mely egyetlen-egy vigasz, -
Szerelemnek, szeretetnek
Holdvilága! te vagy az.
Elkisérsz-e? oh, kisérj el -
Nincs az messze - síromig;
S fátyolozd be derüs éjjel
Aki majd ott álmodik!

Retrospect (English)

I too have lived... is not life this:
First birth, then struggle through a few
Tricky decades of hit and miss
Doing the best a man can do?
I too have lived...the same frail barge
Has spawned and rocked me in which nurse
Dispatches her small infant charge
To cope for better or for worse.

From that first day the clouds bent down
And leant across my tiny cot!
Laughter I learned, but that dull frown
With all its tears I had by heart;
Joy was not ladled out in pails
Nor even filled a glass, in truth,
I watched in vain through iron rails
The pleasant rosebuds of my youth.

There were occasions my heart stopped:
I stretched out my hand to pluck of them
But all too late – the petals dropped
As soon as I had touched the stem.
I looked for happiness, have sought
The stranger everywhere, but steered
Round its spectre, if I but thought
It suddenly threatened to appear.

I longed for independence, yet
Carried the chains which round me bent
In case the struggle or defeat
Should worsen my predicament;
I was the beast whose vain attempts
To struggle or to kick and bite
The rope too easily pre-empts
By winding itself still more tight.
Dreams too I had, such dreams rehearsed..
The dreams of many a youthful day!
Long vanished all, all quite dispersed
Like fog the breeze soon blows away.
That perfect image – gone to grass,
Those castles – a mere puff of air,
That hope, that sense, that world, alas,
They’re not to be found anywhere.

Too weak to die, too thin, too fraught
To seize at death and end the strife,
Too feeble now to drag about
The heavy carcass of my life.
Who will relieve me of the load...
But stop, it’s not all over – here,
Despite the weight, across the road
A beam of hope is shining clear.

Simple light of tender fabric,
Sole consolation, ah romance,
Moonlit world before the daybreak
Affection, love, you radiance,
Will you go with me? It’s not far –
Far as the grave – and lead me by
The veiled light of that cheerful star
Which lives in dreams and so will die!
