Večerní písně / II (Czech)

Já jsem ten rytíř z pohádky,
jenž hrdě vyjel do světa,
abych tu pannu uviděl,
jež jako růže vykvétá.

O ní šla věsť: kdo spatří ji —
ten s kletbou prý to odnese,
budže se v kámen promění,
budže mu srdce vyrve se.

I myslil jsem si u sebe:
Snad přec je někdo vyjmutý!
A vyjel jsem, a za ten hřích
teď — v zpěváka jsem zakletý!

Evensong / II (English)

I am that knight of fairytales,
who proud went on his quest,
to see that maiden virginal,
with rose-like beauty blessed.

And it was said: who her might see —
will with a curse depart,
either to become petrified,
or – torn out – lose his heart.

And so I thought about my case:
Some must exempted be!
I rode, and for my sins became
— a songster, spellbound, me!.
