Életrajz

Emil Hakl (1958) is widely recognized as one of the most remarkable writers of Czech literature and is often compared to the great Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal, though Hakl himself discards this comparison as being ridiculous.
Hakl started to publish at the end of the eighties in several literary magazines. In 1991 he made his debut with the volume of verses Rozpojená slova (Disconnected Words). His second book, another volume of verses, Zkušební trylky z Marsu (Experimental Quavers From Mars) came in 2000. He now also turned to prose and in 2001 the book of short stories Konec světa (The End of the World) was published. From that time on several novels have seen the light and for his novel O rodičích a dětech (Of Kids & Parents) he was awarded in 2002 the prestigious Magnesia Litera Prize for prose. The rights Of Kids & Parents are sold to Poland, The Netherlands, USA, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Norway and Spain. The international press reacted very positive to this book and for instance the chief literature of the Belgian large daily newspaper De Standaard acclaimed it as book of the year 2009.
In 2008 Hakl published the grand novel Let čarodějnice (Flight of the Witch) and it was one of the most sensational books of 2008.
His most recent novel, published in 2010, is called Pravidla směšného chování (Rules of Peculiar Behaviour). It can be seen as a follow-up to his novel Of Kids & Parents and it was very well received by the Czech media, resulting in a nomination for the Josef Škvorecký Prize.
