Tóth Árpád: An invitation (Hívogató in English)

Portre of Tóth Árpád

Hívogató (Hungarian)

Én szép ifjuságom

Sárgul hervadozva,

Ülök már a sutban

Lomhán darvadozva -

Ilyen vagyok én már,

Fanyar, csöndes, fáradt,

Így szeress, ha kellek,

Nem járok utánad!

Jó volt, hiszen jó volt

Fiatalnak lenni,

Kényesbús fejemnek

Nők keblén pihenni,

Víg, ravasz hunyással

Lesni alattomba,

Játszik-e földrengést

Keblük puha dombja...

Mint a kerekerdő

Májusi virággal,

Tele volt a szívem

Tréfás ifjúsággal;

Mint a kerekerdő

Novemberi gőzzel,

Tele már a szívem

Keseredő ősszel.

Zord egy kerekerdő!

Csupa sár és felleg!

Kivirul még? Mindegy!

Így szeress, ha kellek.

Ordas bánatommal,

Dércsípte kedvemmel,

Nagy hallgatásokkal,

Őszi szerelemmel!

Békítő vég-kortynak

Keresem a kútját,

E bolond világnak

Szent kifele-útját:

Ha van ajkad méltó,

Ily csókkal itass meg,

Ha van karod áldott,

Az útat mutasd meg!

An invitation (English)

My youth, full of beauty,

Wilts, yellows, day by day,

Ensconced beside the stove

l loll my time away -

Well, that is how I am

Tart, quiet and austere,

Do love me just for me

I will not chase you, dear!

Nice, but really nice was

To be young and to rest

My mournful fussy head

Upon a woman's breast,

Eyes closed, but detecting,

With sneaky, cunning skills,

The seismic play beneath

The softness of the hills.

As forests in Maytime

With floral attractions,

So my youthful heart was

Full with waggish actions;

As forests are filled with

November in the air

So my heart is filled with

Autumnal bleak despair.

Cloudy, grim the forest!

And mud where mud can be!

Blooms will come? No matter!

Do love me just for me.

I offer dun sorrows,

Hoar-frost disposition,

Lasting silences, and

Autumn love's admission.

I seek the well that holds

The final sip to peace,

Way out from this mad world

That brings blessed release:

If your lips be worthy,

Do kiss my thirst away,

If your arms be blessed,

Do come, point out the way!
