Radnóti Miklós: Lángok lobognak

Portre of Radnóti Miklós

Lángok lobognak (Hungarian)

Lángok lobognak és kihúnynak lassan s mindörökre
   katonák lelke száll most a fényes délkörökre
egyforma lelkek! ó, mindegy, hogy ez, vagy az ki volt, mi volt,
   míg itt a hőség hajlong, amott a fagy sikolt;
a hánykolódó hajók ágyúinál honvágytól részeg
   és sárga félelemtől rókázó tengerészek!
aknák lebegnek mindenütt, virraszt az érzékeny halál
   s dagálykor néha sikos testével partraszál;
holt férfiak kisérik ringva és széttépett delfinek,
   a hajnal ott is fölkél, de nem kell senkinek;
egy gép dörögve száll az égen és sötét árnyéka lenn
   némán kiséri röptét a sanda tengeren;
örvény sziszeg felé, jelek szaladnak szét a víz felett,
   a zátony vért virágzik tüskés koral helyett;
egész nap bőg a vész, olaj csorog a pontos gépeken,
   mögöttük vak düh bujkál s viszhangzó félelem,
majd füstbe fúl a nap s akár a hosszuszárú fájdalom,
   úgy hajladoz a hold már a másik oldalon
s lángok lobognak és kihúnynak lassan s mindörökre
   katonák lelke száll most a fényes délkörökre.

Flames fluttering... (English)

Small flames are fluttering alive and slowly and forever dying –
    towards the bright meridian, the souls of sailors flying:
souls all alike!... whatever each of them had been or seen or done,
    whether numbed by the cold or oppressed by the sun,
all serving by cannon, drunk with longing, vomiting in the grip
   of blinding fear, all of them sailors onboard a heaving battleship!
the watch is kept by sensitive death: beneath the ship, mines glide
   and from time to time, their slimy harvest washed up by the tide:
a catch of swaying corpses, of shattered dolphins, lifeless spawn...
   there too, a hesitant sun will rise, but no-one loves a false dawn –
and overhead a hostile aircraft roars and its advance across the sky
   is marked by its mute reflection projected darkly upon the sly
expanse below, and whirlpools hiss and urgent signals flash about,
   instead of the coral of the reef, the flower of blood would sprout,
day and night the peril howls and oil seeps from the fine machine,
   as the vessel is tracked by an echo of despair and rage unseen
and while the sun is drowned in smoke, and like a terrified
   and writhing human face, the moon appears on the other side...
small flames are fluttering alive and slowly and forever dying –
    towards the bright meridian, the souls of sailors flying.
