Radnóti Miklós: Just walk about, condemned man (Járkálj csak, halálraítélt! in English)

Portre of Radnóti Miklós

Járkálj csak, halálraítélt! (Hungarian)

Járkálj csak, halálraítélt!
bokrokba szél és macska bútt,
a sötét fák sora eldől
előtted: a rémülettől
fehér és púpos lett az út.

Zsugorodj őszi levél hát!
zsugorodj, rettentő világ!
az égről hideg sziszeg le
és rozsdás, merev füvekre
ejtik árnyuk a vadlibák.

Ó, költő, tisztán élj te most,
mint a széljárta havasok
lakói és oly bűntelen,
mint jámbor, régi képeken
pöttömnyi gyermek Jézusok.

S oly keményen is, mint a sok
sebtől vérző, nagy farkasok.

Just walk about, condemned man (English)

Just walk about, condemned man, walk!
the cat and a gale hide in the shrubs,
the dusky avenue of trees
moves tumbling towards you, and the road arches
its back in fear: its dust turns pale.

Just shrivel up, you autumn leaves!
and shrivel up, you dreadful world!
the cold comes hissing down from the sky
and the passing wild geese drop their shadows
upon the stiffened, rusty grass.

Oh poet, now you must be pure
like those who live on vast and windswept
snow-covered peaks, and innocent,
as innocent as the tiny Christ child
in pious paintings of the past.

And yes, you must indeed be tough
like great wolves bleeding from many wounds.
