Radnóti Miklós: For a copy of Steep Road (A „Meredek Út” egyik példányára in English)

Portre of Radnóti Miklós

Back to the translator

A „Meredek Út” egyik példányára (Hungarian)

Költő vagyok és senkinek se kellek,

akkor se, hogyha szótlan dünnyögök:

È - È - È - sebaj, hisz énekelnek

helyettem kandi ördögök.

S higgyétek el, higgyétek nékem el,

joggal legyez az óvatos gyanu!

költő vagyok, ki csak máglyára jó,

mert az igazra tanu.

Olyan, ki tudja, hogy fehér a hó,

piros a vér és piros a pipacs.

És a pipacs szöszöske szára zöld.

Olyan, kit végül is megölnek,

mert maga sosem ölt.

For a copy of Steep Road (English)

I'm a poet and nobody needs me,

not even if I mutter wordlessly:

u-u-u- no matter, for instead of me,

prying devils will sing relentlessly.

And believe me, believe you me,

the cautious suspicion is justified.

I'm a poet who's fit for the stake's fire

because to the truth he's testified.

One, who knows that the snow is white,

the blood is red, as is the poppy,

and the poppy's furry stalk is green.

One, whom they will kill in the end,

because he himself has never killed.
