Rab Zsuzsa: Lelet

Portre of Rab Zsuzsa

Lelet (Hungarian)

Úgy nézek néha tárgyaimra,
golyóstollra, órára, késre,
mint valaki háromezerben,
ha majd az agyagból kivéste.

Lelet lesz koponyám is.
Amikor tenyerembe bágyad,
érzem a bőr alatt
a múzeumi tárgyat –
NŐI KOPONYA, XX. SZÁZAD
(akkor még pusztított a rák) –
adják hírül
ki tudja milyen hieroglifák.

Embernél bölcsebb műszerek talán
azt is elmagyarázzák,
miféle gondok lakták hajdanán
agyam lakatlan csigaházát.
Hogyan éltem, elmondják csontjaim,
évgyűrűi a mésznek:
vállhúzó terhek, fűtetlen telek,
háborús vitaminhiány,
évtizedes asztalra-görnyedések.

Hírmondó leszek csontjaimmal.
Hogy tetteimmel, nem remélem.
Úgy kellene valahogy mégis élnem,
tudva, hogy létem nyoma még lehet
döntő tanú.
Atomkori lelet.

Finds (English)

I keep watching my things sometimes -
the ballpointpen, the watch, the knife -
as if someone in three thousand
has just dug them out of the ground.

My skull will be a find, too.
When it languishes in my hands,
under my skin I sense
the museum object –
FEMALE SKULL, 20TH CENTURY
(cancer still ravaged then) -
will be written on it
in who knows what hieroglyphs.

Instruments wiser than humans will perhaps
explain it as well
what kind of worries used to dwell
in the deserted shell of my braincells.
How I used to live will be revealed by my bones,
age-rings of lime:
loads straining shoulders, unheated winters,
wartime lack of vitamins,
decades of stooping over a desk.

I’ll be a messenger with my bones.
If with my deeds, too, I can’t hope.
Still I should live my life somehow
aware that bits of my existence still can be
relevant witness.
Atomic age find.
