Pilinszky János: Admonition (Intelem in English)

Portre of Pilinszky János
Portre of Jacobson, Kathleen

Back to the translator

Intelem (Hungarian)

Ne a lélekzetvételt. A zihálást.

Ne a nászasztalt. A lehulló

maradékot, hideget, árnyakat.

Ne a mozdulatot. A kapkodást.

A kampó csöndjét, azt jegyezd.

Arra figyelj, amire városod,

az örök város máig is figyel:

tornyaival, tetőivel,

élő és halott polgáraival.

Akkor talán még napjaidban

hírül adhatod azt, miről

hírt adnod itt egyedűl érdemes.

Írnok,

akkor talán nem jártál itt hiába.

Admonition (English)

Not the breathing, but the wheezing.

Not the wedding table, but the falling

crumbs, coldness, shadows.

Not the motion. The trepidation.

The silence of a clamp, write about these.

Pay attention to what your city,

the enduring city until today marks:

with its towers, rooftops,

living and dead civilians.

Then perhaps still in your days

you can report about what is

only worthy of reporting.

Scribe,

then perhaps your passage was not in vain.
