Pilinszky János: Enough (Elég in English)

Portre of Pilinszky János

Back to the translator

Elég (Hungarian)

A teremtés bármilyen széles,
ólnál is szűkösebb.
Innét odáig. Kő, fa, ház.
Teszek, veszek. Korán jövök, megkésem.

És mégis olykor belép valaki
és ami van, hirtelenűl kitárúl.
Elég egy arc látványa, egy jelenlét,
s a tapéták vérezni kezdenek.

Elég, igen, egy kéz elég amint
megkeveri a kávét, vagy ahogy
"visszavonúl a bemutatkozásból",
elég, hogy elfeledjük a helyet,
a levegőtlen ablaksort, igen,
hogy visszatérve éjszaka szobánkba
elfogadjuk az elfogadhatatlant.

Enough (English)

However broad Creation is,
it’s narrower than a sty.
From here up to there. Stone, wood, house.
I bustle and fuss about. I come early, I’m late.

And still, someone enters now and then,
and everything here will suddenly open up.
It’s enough to see a face, someone being here,
and tapestries will start bleeding.

A hand, yes, a hand stirring a coffee
will be enough, or a hand
„withdrawing from greeting someone”,
it’s enough to forget the place,
the airless row of windows, yes,
so that returning to our room at night
we can accept what’s unacceptable.
