Pásztor Béla: On Red Snow (Vörös havon in English)

Portre of Pásztor Béla

Vörös havon (Hungarian)

Ha üldözik a kígyót,
Hozzásimul egy ághoz.
Szárnyaival a lepke
Kék szirmokat utánoz.

Vadak a téli tájon
Hószürke bundát öltnek.
S ki venne nyíllal célba
Fát, virágot és földet?

Ha űzött kígyó lennék,
Sziszegnének az ágak.
Ha lepke volnék, szirmok
Szárnyakként csapongnának.

Bujdokló róka lennék,
A hó vörössé válna…
És velem hullnál, világ,
A gyűrűző halálba.

On Red Snow (English)

If a snake is being chased,
it snuggles up on a branch.
A butterfly with its wings
copies blue petals of plants.

Beasts in a winter landscape
in their snow-grey coats go round.
And who would shoot an arrow
at a tree, plant or the ground?

If I were a snake that’s chased,
the branches would start hissing.
If I were a butterfly,
petals would flutter like wings.

Were I a fox in hiding,
the snow would then turn red…
And you world, you would fall
with me into whirling death.
