Páskándi Géza: Lame Venus (Sánta Vénusz in English)

Portre of Páskándi Géza
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Sánta Vénusz (Hungarian)

Fény volt ő is, de eljutott az árnyig.

Kölyök-vággyal meglestem sánta Sárit.

Komisz legények döntötték a sárba,

mert könnyen hull, kit elhagyott a lába.

A teste térdig tékozló tökély volt,

s nyakára röppent néhány fura-kék folt,

részeg fogaknak vaksi vétek-varja,

és nem volt csősz, hogy onnan fölzavarja.

S egy boros férfi, mint múltunk törökje,

ma Sárin mankót s szenteket tör össze,

mint barbár, ki a falhoz szobrot lódít,

egy sánta Vénuszt, fordított milóit.

Lame Venus (English)

She reached the shade but once had been the light.

I spied on lame Sarah with boyish delight.

Hooligans pushed her just themselves to please,

for one whose leg had failed can fall with ease.

Sarah, from knee up, was just pure perfection,

but for blue blotches which were from an action

of the drunken teeth that were not kept at bay

and there was no keeper to chase them away.

A wine sodden man, as our Turks of old

broke crutches on Sarah and the saints of gold:

Iconoclastic - he just could not resist

destroying lame Venus, de Milo with a twist.
