Ha már öreg leszek:
lesz öt macskám, és kilenc ebem,
és lesz, aki mócsingot mér nekik,
igen, lesz majd egy hentesem...

Igen, talán ha már öreg leszek,
s a villakertben látom játszani őket,
a törpék és a szökőkút között,
igen, s na persze: el-elrévedek –

Most aztán végképp furcsa lenne, ha
prófétaként végezném, zsinegen,
s nem lenne villakertem, se ebem,
se macskám, se hentesem...

Ó, persze, mondanák a macskagazdikák,
na, persze, mondanák a kutyagazdikák,
hát, persze, mondanák a villagazdikák,
így végzi mind, mondanák, hát igen.

Valamit tenni kell már, azt hiszem,
mielőtt ideér a Semmisem,
óh macskagazdikák, óh, villagazdikák, 
valamit tenni kell itt, hát igen.

When I'll be old, I'll own:
five pussycats, nine dogs, yes, quite a few,
and someone who'll supply the tendon meat,
well yes, for sure, I'll have a butcher, too.
 
And yes, when I am old and maybe frail
and see them playing in the cottage yard,
between the fountain and the plaster gnomes,
my mind at times will wander off the trail -
 
But then, it would be utterly strange indeed
if I would end as prophet on a string,
no cottage, cat or dog, no anything,
or butcher who the sinew bits would bring…
 
Of course, the ones who own the cats would say,
well, doubtless, those who own the dogs would say,
for certain, those with cottages would say:
that lot will end up badly, that’s a fact.
 
Something needs be done - I make the call -
before arrival of Nothing-at-all,
you, who own the cottages, and you who own the cats,
something needs be done here, that’s a fact.
