Kovács András Ferenc: The Gospel according to Andrew (András evangéliuma in English)

Portre of Kovács András Ferenc

András evangéliuma (Hungarian)

1
Kezdetben volt a sírás:
zöld köveké a szélben,
friss kerti fáké - a fény
forró kardja ha zúgott.

2
Nyüzsögtek ott, vergődtek
városok, mint hálóban
halak: hiú világba
vetettek miként magok.

3
Mert így szórattatunk szét.

4
Sosem leszünk bölcsebbek,
jobbak, halhatatlanok:
minden eltöröltetik.

5
Három vagy négy véletlen
kézvonás: pusztában írt
gazdátlan szép nevek - a
többi névtelen homok.

6
Írás vagyunk s a kéz, mely
eltöröl - mintha a föld
fáradt hátát simogatná.

7
Mit írtam a porba,
mit? S miért tüntettem el?
Tüzeknek üdvét, bűnjelét:
vak angyaloknak énekét?

The Gospel according to Andrew (English)

1
In the beginning was weeping:
of green stones in the wind,
of fresh orchard trees, of light -
the hum of its hot blade.

2
Bustling cities, people there
writhing like fish in the net:
into a world of vanity
sown like so many seeds.

3
And thus have we been scattered.

4
We will never be wiser,
better or immortal:
everything has been destroyed.

5
Three or four accidental
pen-strokes: beautiful unowned
names drawn in the desert - the
rest anonymous sand.

6
We are written, and the hand
effaces, as though stroking
the tired back of the world.

7
What did I write in the dust?
What? Why did I erase it?
The pardon of fires and the proof:
the song of sightless angels?
