József Attila: Bitter (Keserű in English)

Portre of József Attila

Back to the translator

Keserű (Hungarian)

Ó rádióaktivitás! most olvasom és görögdinnyét eszem és erősen tudom
Hogy a világ csak bennünk változik
Színes kereplő vagyok csupán, halljátok?
arcom átlátszó, mögötte virágok röpködnek,
amint fölbuktak az elektromos hullámokból
Szeretőmtől is elszakít a humanista század, ó lepipált szomorúság, gyújtsd föl ma éjjel a menhelyeket
Kár, kár miértünk is
De éljenek a köszörűs inasok, akik fütyörésznek
És nem is tudják, hogy az égbolt fejünk fölül
elvitorlázott a pénztárcákba.

Bitter (English)

O radioactivity! I'm reading, eating a watermelon
and l know
the world changes only within us.
I'm only a colored rattle, do you hear me? My face
is transparent, behind it flowers soar,
popped from electronic waves.
A humanist century tears me from my love, oh flicked-off
sorrow. Burn the orphanages.
Lambs are sheep, and I'm an ass,
not even the shadow of a shepherd.
If I close my eyes airplanes crash, and those too
that wing from me daily.
Glittering dust, halt your gilded motors because
she will sweep you out in the morning.
O woman, my lover's tears can drive
those ancient turbines
and it's a shame,
but let this whistling apprentice grinder live.
He doesn't even know the sky
has sailed into his wallet.
