József Attila: Könnyű, fehér ruhában

Portre of József Attila

Könnyű, fehér ruhában (Hungarian)

Ignotus Pálnak

Mindent, mi nem ennivaló,
megrágtam és kiköptem.
Magamtól tudom, mi a jó
s hogy egyre megy, szappangolyó
vagy égbolt van fölöttem.

És tudom, mint a kisgyerek,
csak az boldog, ki játszhat.
Én sok játékot ismerek,
hisz a valóság elpereg
és megmarad a látszat.

Nem szeretnek a gazdagok,
míg élek ily szegényen.
Szegényeket sem izgatok,
nem állok én vigasznak ott,
ahol szeretni szégyen.

Megalkotom szerelmemet...
Égitesten a lábam:
elindulok az istenek
ellen - a szívem nem remeg -
könnyű, fehér ruhában.

1937. jún.

Dressed in flimsy white (English)

to Pal Ignotus

Whatever I couldn't feed on,
I crushed and spat out.
What's good, I know on my own
if the sky's a bubble overblown
I do not care to doubt.

I understand, like children do,
the only joy is to play.
I do know a game or two,
for the real fades like dew
but specters are here to stay.

I'm not liked by the wealthy
as long as I'm so rough.
And the poor don't take a fancy:
I can't offer them remedy
where it's a shame to love.

I create my own beloved...
I tread on celestial orbs:
I stand up facing the gods
- a heart with a steady pulse -
dressed in flimsy white.
