József Attila: Hosszú az Úristen

Portre of József Attila

Hosszú az Úristen (Hungarian)

Hosszú az Úristen,

rövid a szalonna,

nyavalyás a szegény ember,

mintha gazdag volna.

Úgy meggörbül, mintha

réti ösvény volna

s rajt libegnének a lányok

tejért a majorba.

Hosszú és kemény is,

püspököké mégis,

rábízná pedig siralmas

dolgát a szegény is.

Jutna neki kolbász,

asszonyának szoknya -

az ájtatos Úristenhez

vigadozva szokna.

Délszemmel ha néz a

sokútú világra,

a legbajosabb dülőkön

a szegényt találja.

Ha ma sincs, hogy értünk

seregekké lenne,

szegény ember, ha elpusztul,

nem is pihen benne.

How long the Lord (English)

How long the Lord,

how short the lard.

How sick the poor,

how rich men are.

He bends and turns

where dairy barns

open their doors

to milking girls.

How long, how hard

the bishops’ God,

and still the poor

would trust his care.

A sausage ring,

a wifely dress,

and they would learn

to bear the Lord.

With summer eyes

he sees, surveys –

the poor are where

the dangers are.

If to this day

he’s not our Host,

the wasted poor

cannot rest there.
