G. István László: Lunching in Common (Közös ebéd in English)

Portre of G. István László

Közös ebéd (Hungarian)

Kiszedem a tálat a kezedből. Ma én
terítek. A közös evés, persze, hagymahéj
az időben, leválik rólunk, hiába ülöm
meg az asztalt, a lelkünk üres zsúrkocsi,
tologatjuk. Neked amúgy is fáj minden,
ami a szádhoz ér, kisebesedett benned,
hogy élni kell – ezért nem jó soha
enni. Töltök vizet. Figyelem a buborékokon
át a pohárba mélyedő tekintetedet,
a kezed, ahogy csuklómhoz ér, jeges,
félszívű nyugtatás, inkább sebez. Most mi
baj? Mondjam, fényes délben, hogy megint
este lett – találjak ezerféleképp neked
feloldozást? Inkább engedem, hogy félreérts,
hámozok almát, érdeklődöm, ahogy az emberek,
adok-veszek, bizalmat, lelkifurdalást.
Vár ránk egy délután, külön, csupa számon-
kérlelhetetlen pillanat, mikor indulok,
rájövök, hogy egyedül fogsz leszedni.
Csillogni kezd bennem jóvátehetetlenül
a sok felengedett zsír, meg a szemed.

Lunching in Common (English)

I take the dish out of your hands. Today
I lay the table. A common meal is, of course,
onion skin in time, peeling off. In vain
do I head the table, our souls are empty trolleys,
we push them around. For you, anyway,
whatever touches your mouth is painful, a sore
to have to live – that’s why eating is never
any good. I pour us some water. Through bubbles
I watch your gaze sink in the glass. Your hand
touching my wrist is icy. Comforting
half-heartedly is worse than wounding. So now
what’s wrong? Shall I say in broad daylight that again
it’s evening – shall I find thousands of ways for your
absolution? I rather let you misunderstand me,
I peel an apple, show interest as people do,
I give and take – confidence, remorse.
An afternoon awaits us, so many
unreckonable moments. When I start out
I realize that you’ll clear the table alone.
In me there is the irredeamable glitter
of so much grease in the sink and in your eyes.
