Faludy György: A kilencvenegyedik

Portre of Faludy György

A kilencvenegyedik (Hungarian)

Mi volna, hogyha Plátó feltámadna
s belépne hozzánk ma este, ahogy
itt ülünk a villanynál s az ablakban
gépek szállnak, mint roppant csillagok ?

Anyanyelvén köszöntenők; juhsajtot
tennénk eléje, sonkát, friss tejet;
ő enne, inna, meghallgatná Bachot
s azt hinné : mi vagyunk az istenek.

Elmondanók, hogy az anyagit látja
s az jó; de hogy az élet kvalitása
borzalmas és kultúránk szétesik;

hogy idióták s lókötők vezetnek
bennünket, kik semmit se védenek meg;
s hogy itt már nincs is mit megvédeni.

Sonnet ninety-one (English)

What would occur if we resurrected Plato?
He would come in this evening as we sit
together by the lamplight in the window
as planes are flying round like monstrous planets.

We'd give him goat cheese, welcome him in Greek,
put before him ham and milk and bread.
He would eat and drink and listen to Bach
and think that he was with immortal gods.

Yet we would say he only sees the shell
that may look well enough, although, within,
our culture rots and life is horrible,

our leaders being idiots, fools, and brigands
who value nothing and stand up for nothing
till now there's nothing left here to defend.
